Being locked out late at night feels worse than the same problem at noon. Knowing how a locksmith works through it can take some of the stress out of the wait.
Three kinds of lockout
Home: you can't get into your house or apartment. Vehicle: you can't get into your car or trunk. Business: you can't open your office or shop. Each uses different hardware and tools, so tell the locksmith which it is when you call.
Assessing the situation
On arrival, the locksmith checks the lock type, whether the key is lost or simply locked inside, whether the lock is damaged, and whether anyone at risk is inside. They'll also confirm you're entitled to access the property.
Non-destructive entry first
Most standard locks can be opened without damage using picks, bypass tools or vehicle entry tools. Drilling is a last resort, used only when a lock is high-security or broken, and a good locksmith tells you before doing it.
Rekeying or replacing afterwards
If keys were lost or stolen, rekeying makes them useless. If a lock was damaged, it can often be replaced on the same visit.
How to prepare
- Save a local locksmith's number
- Leave a spare key with someone nearby
- Consider a keypad lock as a backup to keys
- Keep your phone charged when you're out late
